Following yesterday’s post about the prevalence of drinking and driving, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program is offering rides to anyone who has been drinking. The rides are available from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Jan. 1. Just call SoberRide at 1-800-200-TAXI. or #Taxi on AT&T Wireless. It’s free up to $30.

WRAP has provided more than 50,000 safe rides home since the SoberRide program began in 1993. In yesterday’s post disclosing the high rate of drivers who have operated a motor vehicle after drinking, in the same AAA survey, nine out of 10 drivers supported requiring anybody convicted more than once of driving while intoxicated to have a device in his vehicle that would not let it start if he had been drinking. Sixty nine percent supported the idea of such a device for anyone convicted of DWI, including first offenders. Why take the chance of being caught, arrested, jailed and losing your driving privileges. If in doubt, call.
