Always Look to Sharpen Your Skills
You don’t just automatically become a quality lawyer. In order to become a dependable and trusted lawyer you need to put in the time and effort to hone your skills. Even once you have achieved success, however, whether through award recognition or in the eyes of your peers and clients, you should never stop learning. Regardless of your accomplishments, you should always strive to improve. Athletes at the top of their sport can always get better, and attorneys are no different. So what resources are available to attorneys constantly looking to learn more and sharpen their skills?
Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements vary by state. Some states require you to earn a certain number of credits yearly while other states have no requirements at all. But whether or not your state has a requirement, it is critical to attend CLE programs. Attending CLE programs can help you improve existing skills, improve in areas where you are weak or allow you to learn an entirely new skill or area of law.
The good news is there are no shortage of programs throughout the country. I will be attending the American Association for Justice ("AAJ") mid-Winter Meeting in Miami, Florida. In addition to getting credits for the mandatory Virginia requirements, I will also be meeting with top trial lawyers with whom I am working on cases from Georgia, Connecticut, Florida, Washington DC and Germany ! And though I end up each year with many more credits than are required by all the state bars to which I belong, I learn new techniques, laws, trial strategies and medicine. In fact, there are a number of quality upcoming programs. Some of those include:
Deposition Skills: Newark, NJ Feb 4-6
NITA 40th Anniversary Event: Denver, CO Feb 10
Control in the Courtroom: Los Angeles, CA March 3-4
Building Trial Skills: Chicago, IL March 5-12
Deposition Skills: Raleigh, NC March 9-11
You are never too old or young to improve at your craft. If you think you know everything already, think again. Attorneys have great resources at their disposal with a variety of CLE programs offered on a consistent basis. It cannot be emphasized enough how crucial it is to take advantage of these programs. Do not sell your client short. Take the time to become the best lawyer possible and continued success will likely follow.
