Because of underfunding and understaffing of Federal agencies charged with looking out for American’s safety, the present administration has inherited problems from the Bush administration in addition to the domestic economic downturn and foreign wars. One such agency is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ("NHTSA") which is supposed to investigate potential safety defects, such as the Toyota acceleration incidents. A recent CNN interview of the senior enforcement attorney for NHTSA highlights some of the agency’s current problems.
Evidence tends to suggest that the Firestone tire defects, Toyota acceleration and other killer car crash and road risks would have been discovered and thoroughly investigated sooner had the NHTSA been fully staffed and funded. At ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd., we hope that the new administration will fully fund and staff the NHTSA with experienced investigators, electrical engineers and traffic safety experts so that the American traveling public will not be put at an unreasonable risk of harm on our nation’s highways and byways.
