Record Virginia Wrongful Death Verdict

Comments Off

A Virginia jury has awarded $10.5 million to the family of a woman who died in 2007 after a concrete mixer truck fell onto her car on the freeway. The verdict might be the largest award ever in a wrongful death suit in Virginia. According to The Washington Post

The victims were a 25-year-old woman, who died after eight days, and her husband, who survived. Their car was crushed as they drove on State Route 53 near Monticello and were hit by a truck driven the Defendant who was working for Allied Concrete Co. The Defendant driver later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and served 30 days in jail. My friend and former Virginia Trial Lawyers Association president Matthew Murray told Virginia Lawyers Weekly that the December verdict was worth more than $12 million, including interest. The legal publication report indicated the apparent record for a wrongful death verdict in Virginia was a $10.4 million case in Newport News for a shipyard worker exposed to asbestos. Congratulations to Mr. Murray on a fine job in a tragic case.
