Victims Wait for Reimbursement While Lawyer's Firm Bills BP Oil $10 Million

"Justice delayed is justice denied." That quote is on our Federal Courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia, home of the "Rocket Docket." Because we are used to relatively short waiting in times to get our "day in court," I was pained to hear the news reports concerning the tragic BP Oil spill and the administration of the payments for the harms and losses this environmental disaster caused. When the Washington law firm, which is billing the corporate Defendant over $10 million dollars a year according to Bloomberg, has accomplished only one final payment in 9 months, also for $10 million dollars, for a claim where the oil company interceded on their customer’s behalf, something smells upwind…

The Oil Company is paying $850,000 per month to the law firm of Kenneth Feinberg, the BP Oil Spill Claims Fund Administrator, according to news reports. The Fund has only reached final settlement in one claim. The settlement amount was ten million dollars, and the money went to a Texas company that does business with the London-based BP and on whose behalf BP interceded. According to news reports, there are nearly 91,000 claims seeking restitution from the BP Oil Spill Fund. The settlement was made after BP intervened on the company’s behalf. BP characterized the settlement with another corporation while so many individuals and small businesses wait, "a unique situation." The international Oil Corporation declined to name the business, citing confidentiality. I think that there should be transparency to the process, that there should not be any "secret" or "side deals" by BP Oil with its customers, putting their interests ahead of all the innocent victims of the Gulf Oil Spill disaster.
