Social Security Backlog

Unfortunately, our office has been finding Social Security cases are taking longer and longer to reach a successful resolution. Recently, the House Ways and Means Committee held an oversight hearing to deal with this very issue. According to the information presented at this hearing, 1.3 million Americans are currently awaiting a decision regarding their claims. Individuals who have had their cases denied at an early stage are now waiting even longer with an average of 532 days for a decision on their appeal. It doesn’t take that long for the Earth to circle the sun.

The panelists explained that the problem is staffing which inadequate funding further causes. Though a number of solutions were presented and discussed, including technological improvements and staff priorities, without adequate appropriations, Ethel Zelenske, believes the situation will continue to deteriorate.
