Brain Injury – The #1 Public Health Problem in the World by 2020

There are thousands of people currently living with the devastating effects of brain injury, without access to the vital services they require to repair their lives and be able to live safely and independently in Northern Virginia. Brain Injury Services ("BIS") has been assisting local families and individuals with brain injury for over two decades.

Brain Injury Services recently alerted volunteers like Herndon lawyer Doug Landau to the fact that the problem is growing.

Why is brain injury expected to be the #1 public health problem in the world by 2020 ? With today’s medical advances, there is a large and growing population of individuals who survive a brain injury. As a result, it is estimated that over five million Americans currently need long-term support with the skills of daily living. However, long-term rehabilitative community based services for adults and children living with brain injuries continues to be one of the most underfunded health issues across the United States, both in terms of government funding and limited insurance coverage, even though it has proven to be highly successful and cost effective. To make matters worse, people are being discharged from acute rehabilitation care quicker than ever before – many left in unsafe circumstances, and many more placed inappropriately in nursing homes where the focus is on maintenance rather than recovery. • • An estimated 5.3 million Americans live with significant disabilities as a result of a traumatic brain injury.
  • • Motor vehicle accidents and stroke are leading causes of brain injuries in adults.
  • • Brain Injury is the leading cause of death and disability for children and adolescents in the United States.

I have experienced here in Akron Ohio that the only support services I availaible are only for those on medicare or medicade so I am just out of luck. <~ This is an intense life changing event that ought to really be looked at in reguards to why are the support clubs etc. that are in place not accessable to any one that isn’t willing to just stop trying and strives for a better quality of life.

It’s sad how many people can became permanently disabled after suffering a brain injury. A man was recently disabled after riding a Segway in a demonstration on an obstacle course blind folded.
