Making the Fairfax County Parkway Safer

Comments Off

Having helped victims injured on the Fairfax County parkway (Route 7100) by speeding motorists, distracted and reckless drivers, Herndon Reston and Fairfax car crash lawyer Doug Landau was not surprised by the recent "50 Means 50" campaign by Northern Virginia police. The Traffic Division and the Patrol Division of the Fairfax County Police Department, in cooperation with the Virginia State Police, launched the initiative, “50 Means 50” along Route 7100, the Fairfax County Parkway. The speed limit on this long stretch of roadway, an "outer Beltway," that now connects I-95 with Route 7, the Dulles Toll Road, the Lee-Jackson Memorial Highway and I-66 is 50 miles per hour. This campaign targeted aggressive and reckless driving; including speeding, texting while driving, following too closely, and failure to pay full time and attention on the Fairfax County Parkway.

Motor squad officers along with patrol officers from several district stations throughout the county and Virginia State Troopers were assigned specific enforcement duties along the parkway. A variety of motor vehicles were utilized including: motorcycles, Mustangs, Camaros, Impalas, pick-up trucks and other unmarked and marked police vehicles. The stepped-up enforcement took place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The intent of the initiative was not to write more tickets. Rather, this safety action was undertaken to try to reduce the overall average speed on the Fairfax County Parkway and to reduce the number of property damage, injury, and fatal crashes, making the Parkway a safer place for all. According to news reports, there have been 14 fatalities on the Fairfax County Parkway since 2004. Everyone at the Herndon law firm of ABRAMS LANDAU hopes that this law enforcement effort will lead to safer driving on our local Fairfax, Reston and Loudoun County roadways.
